Helping to Understand the Business of Writing

If you are “selling” your book, your story, or yourself, it becomes a business-the business of writing.

I frequently encounter writers who do not know the business of writing. Many work on the aspect of their craft, but ignore the comprehensive understanding of the industry, its dynamics, and key players. Just as one cannot practice medicine without knowledge of the healthcare industry or develop software without a familiarity of the tech sector, being a writer necessitates more than a creative skill, or just the desire to write. Producing “the next great American novel” isn’t sufficient for recognition, publication, or success. No one is coming to your door and knocking. A writer must understand the business and actively engage with marketing to establish oneself as an author. To succeed in the writing world, you must equip yourself with a knowledge of both craft and the intricacies of the publishing industry.

The business of writing combines the creative endeavor with entrepreneurship, requiring writers to not only produce compelling content but also to understand the market, to engage with readers, and to navigate the complexities of the publishing industry.

Being in the trenches with fellow writers, I have been learning the necessary steps to pursue a writing career. For over ten years, I have immersed myself in trying to understand the publishing business. Although writing is a creative endeavor, if and when you want another person to read your work, it then becomes a business endeavor. If you have something-your book, your story, your ideas-that you want someone else to read, sell, publish, produce, learn from, etc., it entails exchanging those goods, services, or ideas for money, or other forms of value, like fame or notoriety. This is commonly known as selling. And with selling comes the most dreaded aspect of most writers–marketing, which involves various activities aimed at persuading potential buyers or readers to make a purchase.

Welcome, you are now an entrepreneur!

All this business of writing can be overwhelming. There is a lot to know. I want to help you along that journey.
